泰戈尔诗译（13）

121．

I carry in my world that flourishes the worlds that have failed.

我把在那些早已破败的世界带进我这生机勃勃的世界。　　　　　　　　　

译注

这句英文乍看起来很费解，主要是各有一个定语从句的world 和worlds二词令人迷惑。其实仔细一看，无非就是直接宾语和间接宾语的问题。如果说I carry the worlds in my world，大概谁都能一目了然，就是把前面的世界带进我的世界。而前面的世界是已经破败的（have failed），我的世界则是生机勃勃的（to flourish）。但是诗人却把这个大家熟悉的句式变成I carry in my world the worlds，就颇能令人迷惑。比如有人就译成：我把在那些已逝去的世界上的繁荣带到我的世界上来。　　　　　　　　　

感言

我的世界永远生机勃勃，因为我的世界总有梦想。

My world always flourishes because there is always a dream in it.

Dear friend, I feel the silence of your great thoughts of many a deepening eventide on this beach when I listen to these waves.

亲爱的朋友呀，我聆听海涛时，就能感受到你对这片海滨上无数深沉的黄昏，正在进行伟大的冥思。　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　

译注

Eventide（诗）黄昏、薄暮。Many a 多，引申为无数。Feel the silence of your great thoughts不必绝对按字面翻译成“感到你的伟大思想的沉默了”。这句诗比较长，直译会是这样：亲爱的朋友呀，我聆听海涛时就能感受到你对这片海滨无数深沉的黄昏所引发的伟大的冥思。

感言

最美不过夕阳红。

Nothing is more beautiful than the setting sun.

123．

The bird thinks it is an act of kindness to give the fish a life in the air.

鸟儿以为能在空中给鱼儿一条性命就是善举一桩。

译注

给鸟和鱼添加儿化韵，可使韵味鲜活俏皮。

感言

善举是叶，善心是根。

Doing good things is leave; having a kind heart is root.

124．

In the moon thou sendest thy love letters to me,

I leave my answers in tears upon the grass.

你在月下向我递送情书，

我含泪将复信置于草上。

译注

Thou, sendest, thy古典英语或诗歌用词，分别为you, sends, your.

感言

我和月亮有个约。他挂在天上，我站在窗前。我们相对无语，却已心照不宣。月亮想来地上，我想飞上天空。

There’s an agreement between the moon and me. He’s hanging in the sky, while I’m standing at the window. Face to face we’ve nothing to say but we’ve a tacit understanding. The moon wants to come down to the earth but I want to fly up into the sky.

125．

The great is a born child; when he dies he gives his great childhood to the world.

伟人天生就是一介顽童，他死时就把自己精彩的童年交给世界。　

译注

The great is a born child 切勿死译成“伟人是一个天生的孩子”。“伟人天生就是一个孩子”，似乎更合乎汉语习惯。此处的 great是名词，伟大的人物，伟大的事件。Great childhood翻译成“精彩的童年”，似乎比“伟大的童年”更合理，因为great作形容词时不仅作“伟大的”解释，还有“精彩，美妙”等含义。但在本句里，如果为了使前后两个great互相照应，翻译成“伟大的”也未尝不可。但这样做，前面的“伟人”应该译成“伟大的人物”与后面的“伟大的童年”相互呼应，才比较完美。由此看来，翻译时要根据具体情况而灵活多变，尤其要注意前后呼应。

感言

平凡中表现的伟大才能永恒。

Only the greatness displayed in commonness is everlasting.

126．

Not hammer-strokes, but dance of the water sings the pebbles into perfection.

不是槌击，乃是水舞，才把卵石唱得臻于完美。　　

译注

Dance of the water sings有人译为“水载歌载舞”，不太贴切。此处的sing是动词，不是名词。是“唱着使”的意思。Sing a baby to sleep. 唱着使孩子入睡。Sing out the Old Year and sing in the New (Year). 唱着歌辞旧岁迎新年。

感言

水是技艺高超的雕刻家，滴水穿石是他的杰作。

Water is a skillful carver. “Constant dripping wears away stone” is his masterpiece.

127．

Bees sip honey from flowers and hum their thanks when they leave.

The gaudy butterfly is sure that the flowers owe thanks to him.

蜂从花中啜蜜，离开时营营道谢。　　　　　　　　　　

艳俗的蝶确信花应对他感恩戴德。　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　

译注

Bees 和butterfly可以翻译成双字词“蜜蜂”和“蝴蝶”。但诗歌尽量删除可有可无的字，以时句子凝练。这虽然不是大问题，但对于短短的诗句来说，应该力求简洁。

感言

傲骨可贵；傲气可耻。
